Engagement sessions & surprise proposals

Asheville Engagement & Proposal Photographer

For the question itself, or for the months between yes and the wedding. Relaxed sessions in the places you love.

Proposals

Planning a surprise proposal in Asheville

A proposal happens once and lasts about ten seconds. Having it photographed properly takes a little planning, and that is the part we are good at.

We help you choose a spot that is beautiful and practical: somewhere the light will be kind at your chosen time, with a natural place for us to wait without looking like photographers. On the day we arrive early, blend in, and photograph the whole thing as it happens, from the moment you kneel to the reaction you will want to see again for the rest of your life.

Afterward we usually spend a short while on relaxed portraits of the two of you, while the adrenaline is still high. Those often turn out to be the favorite photos of the day.

The proposal in this photo happened on the lawn in front of Biltmore House. If you have a place in mind, tell us about it and we will work out how to make it happen there.

How a proposal shoot works

From plan to “yes”

  1. We pick the spot together

Tell us what your partner loves. We suggest locations, check the light for your time of day, and plan a backup if the weather turns.

  2. We agree on a signal

You will know exactly where we are and where to stand. We will send you a photo of the spot so there is no guessing.

  3. We stay invisible

We arrive early and look like any other visitor. Long lenses mean we do not need to be close to capture the moment.

  4. Then we celebrate

A short portrait session right after, with as much or as little direction as you want. Bring champagne if you like.

Engagement sessions

Get comfortable in front of the camera

An engagement session is the best rehearsal you can have for your wedding photos. You get to see how we work, we learn how you move together, and by the wedding day the camera is just part of the furniture.

We do not ask you to perform. Our direction is low-key: prompts that give you something real to do, then we get out of the way. Most couples arrive saying they are awkward in photos and leave having forgotten about it.

Around Asheville the options are endless. Wildflower fields and forest trails, rivers and waterfalls, Blue Ridge Parkway overlooks at sunset, the River Arts District, or somewhere that matters to the two of you, like the bar where you met or your own front porch. Bring an outfit change, your dog, or a picnic. We like it when sessions look like your actual life.

Timing

When to book

Most couples do their engagement session somewhere between six and twelve months before the wedding, which leaves time to use the photos for save-the-dates and your wedding website. Fall color and spring bloom are popular, and the hour before sunset is the most flattering light almost all year.

For proposals, reach out as early as you can, especially for a weekend in October. We will hold the details in strict confidence. Engagement sessions and proposal coverage are each quoted on a short call.

FAQ

Questions couples ask us

How much does an Asheville proposal photographer cost?

Proposal coverage is priced on its own and quoted on a short call. It depends on location, timing and whether you want a portrait session afterward. Send us your plan and we will reply with a quote.

Where are the best places for engagement photos in Asheville?

It depends on what you love. Blue Ridge Parkway overlooks for big views, forest trails and waterfalls for something lush, wildflower fields in summer, and downtown or the River Arts District for something urban. Some sites, including Biltmore, require admission or have their own photography rules, so we check before we go.

Can you photograph a proposal at Biltmore Estate?

Yes. We have photographed a proposal on the lawn in front of Biltmore House. Estate admission and photography rules apply, so we plan around them with you. See our Biltmore page for more.

What should we wear for our engagement session?

Wear something you feel like yourself in, then dress it up one notch. Solid colors and soft textures photograph well; tiny busy patterns and logos do not. Bring comfortable shoes if we are walking, and a second outfit if you want variety.

Is an engagement session included with a wedding collection?

Ask us when you inquire. We will tell you what fits your collection and how to add a session if it is not already part of your quote.
